Goals

Leightweight construction is one of the most important topics for future vehicle concepts in the automotive industry, especially regarding the aspects digitalization, electromobility and  energy and resource efficiency.

The LeichtbauCampus enables research and development of new and innovative lightweight construction concepts for the upcoming vehicle generations in a novel cooperation model. At the interface between science and industry, a unique infrastructure was created, that helps to transform ideas into innovations, which are reflected in sustainable progress in mobility.

Under the guidance of the Automotive Research Centre Niedersachsen (NFF) of the TU Braunschweig, participants from science like Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft commit themselves to a cooperation with the involved industrial partners, who are established as technological leaders in their particular segment, in a new model of a public-private partnership.

In thisfacility, complex and multifacteted fields of research with high research risks and a special potential for disruptive innovations can be worked on. The focus of the technological activities lies on simultaneous material and production engineering development in multi-material systems for hybrid lightweight construction. Further, the whole value-added chain for hybrid components is mapped in the research factory; from the conceptional configuration over the development of carbon fibers and the production of textiles, to the hybrid manufacturing processes including recycling.

The Open Hybrid LabFactory is supported by the funding initiative „Forschungscampus – public-private partnership for innovations“ of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. In addition industrial partners, the state of Lower Saxony and the city of Wolfsburg support the LeichtbauCampus.
